DIGITAL UNDERGROUND Body Hat Syndrome -Black Fr- The Body-Hat Syndrome is the third album from the rap group Digital Underground. The album’s second single, an anti-racism cultural awareness politico called „Wussup Wit the Luv,“ features a solo from the Funkadelic guitarist Michael Hampton, as well as a verse and video appearance by Tupac Shakur. This was the last time Shakur appeared on any Digital Underground release. The album also contains „The Humpty Dance Awards,“ the group’s humorous shout-out to the many artists who sampled „The Humpty Dance“ before 1993 (since then the list has grown to more than 50 artists). The Body-Hat Syndrome, originally released on October 5, 1993, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. DE LA SOUL 3 Feet High And Rising „3 Feet High and Rising is the debut studio album by hip-hop trio De La Soul, and was released on March 3, 1989. It marked the first of three full-length collaborations with producer Prince Paul, which would become the critical and commercial peak of both parties. It contains the singles, “Me Myself and I”, “The Magic Number,” “Buddy,” and “Eye Know”. The album title came from the Johnny Cash song “Five Feet High and Rising”. It is listed on both Rolling Stone’s 200 Essential Rock Records and The Source’s 100 Best Rap Albums. When Village Voice held its annual Pazz & Jop Critics Poll for 1989, 3 Feet High and Rising was ranked #1. It was also listed on Rolling Stone’s The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Released amid the 1989 boom in gangsta rap, which gravitated towards hardcore, confrontational, violent lyrics, De La Soul’s uniquely positive style made them an oddity beginning with the first single, “Me, Myself and I.” Their positivity meant many observers labeled them a “hippie” group, based on their declaration of the “D.A.I.S.Y. Age” (Da. Inner. Soul. Yall). Sampling artists as diverse as Hall & Oates, Steely Dan and The Turtles, 3 Feet High and Rising is often viewed as the stylistic beginning of 1990s alternative hip hop (and especially jazz rap). 3 Feet High & Rising was chosen by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry for its cultural significance and general excellence. COLOURFIELD, THE Very Best Of „Having left the Fun Boy Three at the end of their 1983 US tour, Terry Hall went straight into forming his next group, The Colourfield. Teaming up with former 2Tone labelmates Toby Lyons and Karl Shale (The Swinging Cats) for the band, The Colourfield launched on legendary UK TV music show The Tube, with their debut single “The Colourfield” in January 1984 and followed up later with their second single “Take”. Their debut album followed in early 1985, which contained the hit single “Thinking of You”, as well as subsequent single “Castles In The Air”. Later in the year they released a couple of non-album singles, “I Can’t Get Enough of You Baby” and “Things Could Be Beautiful” (produced by longtime friend, musician/producer Ian Broudie). By the time of their follow-up album, 1987’s Deception, they had dropped to a duo. Launched with a cover of the Sly & The Stone classic “Running Away” and produced by Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, Go Go’s, Scritti Politti), the album fared less well and its final single was a cover of the Bobby Hart/Tommy Boyce track “She”, made famous by the Monkees. JAMAL, AHMAD Emerald City Nights – Live At The Penthouse (1966-1968) Vol. 3 (180-Gram Limited Gatefold Edition) Following the superb initial two volumes, Emerald City Nights: Live at the Penthouse Vol.3, captures spectacular 1966-68 performances by the master pianist’s trio at the Penthouse in Seattle. Also available as a 2-CD set and download.
Package includes reflections by Ahmad Jamal himself, interviews with fellow pianists Les McCann, Emmet Cohen, Monty Alexander, and Joe Alterman, and essays by producer Zev Feldman and journalist Eugene Holley, Jr., among others. The extensive booklet features rare photos by Don Bronstein, Chuck Stewart, and more.
Producer and music sleuth Zev Feldman’s label, Jazz Detective, a division of the newly created Deep Digs Music Group, releases the third and final volume of the Ahmad Jamal sets: Emerald City Nights: Live at the Penthouse (1966-68), featuring previously unreleased performances by master pianist Ahmad Jamal.
The 2-LP set will be issued on 180-gram vinyl transferred from the original tapes and mastered by the legendary Bernie Grundman. The music will also be available as a 2-CD set and download. Transferred from the original tapes by Bernie Grundman, Cal Tjader: Catch The Groove – Live at the Penthouse 1963-1967 is presented as a 180-gram vinyl limited edition 3-LP SET and will also be available as a Deluxe 2-CD set and as a digital download.
Package includes reflections by producer Zev Feldman and jazz writer Greg Casseus, as well as interviews with Poncho Sánchez, Eddie Palmieri, Joe Locke, Gary Burton, Carl Burnett, and Brent Fischer, and a statement by Tjader’s son and daughter Rob and Liz Tjader. The extensive booklet contains previously unpublished photos by Ray Avery and Fred Seligo.
All of the performances heard on this set are previously unreleased. Legendary vibraphone player Tjader is heard with a variety of quintets, backed by pianists Clare Fischer, Lonnie Hewitt and Al Zulaica, bassists Fred Schreiber, Terry Hilliard, Monk Montgomery and Stan Gilbert, drummers Johnny Rae and Carl Burnett, and percussionists Bill Fitch and Armando Peraza.

Following the release of its companion volume Bill Evans, Treasures: Solo, Trio and Orchestra Recordings from Denmark (1965 1969), Elemental Music is proud to announce an exciting new collection of previously unreleased recordings by jazz piano master Bill Evans, Tales: Live in Copenhagen (1964) a limited 180-gram LP mastered by Bernie Grundman. The album will be also issued on CD. The collection, which compiles music that has gone unheard since its debut on Danish radio, is the eleventh collection of hitherto unheard music by the pianist authorized by the Bill Evans Estate and produced by Zev Feldman, a partner in Elemental and the award winning music archeologist known as “the Jazz Detective.” “It’s been an honor for me to work closely with the Bill Evans Estate over the past 13 years,” explains Feldman in his notes. “This is the 11th release I’ve produced, working together with Bill Evans’s son, Evan Evans. It’s been tremendously exciting to see Bill’s legacy passed along to another generation. His music transcends age. It’s gratifying to see more and more people — both young and old — discovering his music. I’m proud to be a part of that discovery process. SHANKAR, RAVI & KHAN, ALI AKBAR In Concert 1972 (2023 Remaster) [BF23 EX] In Concert 1972 is a double live album by sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar and sarodiya Ali Akbar Khan, which was produced by George Harrison, Zakir Hussain and Phil McDonald. It is a noted example of the two Hindustani classical musicians’ celebrated duet style of playing, with accompaniment from tabla player Alla Rakha.
Following Shankar’s death in December 2012, David Fricke of Rolling Stone included In Concert 1972 as one his recommended recordings by the sitarist, writing: “This wonderful recording comes from a show at New York’s Philharmonic Hall with a dream team: Ali Akbar Khan on sarod and Alla Rakha on tabla. RUSSELL, LEON Hank Wilson, Vol. II (BF23 EX) Dark Horse Records is proud to reissue LEON RUSSELL’s 1984 album Hank Wilson Vol. II on limited Red Vinyl for Record Store Day Black Friday. The album notably features a duet with Willie Nelson on the country standard “Wabash Cannonball,” plus takes on classics by Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell, and Don Gibson. Russell was born in Oklahoma, had a home in Tulsa, and grew up around country and blues music. After making successful rock albums, touring, and releasing the concert album Leon Live, he returned to his roots under the name of a fictional musical personality: Hank Wilson. PERRY, LEE „SCRATCH“ & RICHARDS, KEITH Scratch’d (BF23 EX) KEITH’s guitar parts for “Heavy Voodoo” and its dubplate companion “Who Dares Dub’ were recorded in New York City sessions for the 2008 LEE ‘SCRATCH’ PERRY album, Scratch Came, Scratch Saw, Scratch Conquered. Shortly after Keith’s contribution were laid down, Scratch set to work at his home in Einsiedeln, Switzerland, jamming live on mic alongside Keith’s new guitar parts. Lee’s Swiss-mountain lair was not strictly for recording, but the combination art studio, shrine and junk yard with its view of a valley and up into the snow-capped Alpine peaks, added its own influence to the recordings. Captured on portable recording gear with Lee using his special sacred jewel-encrusted Shure microphone, the Voodoo was indeed Heavy that day. A year later, Keith was back in the same New York studio to record parts for “Books Of Moses,” for what would become Scratch’s Grammy-nominated 2010 album, Revelation. This time Keith stripped out the original track and replaced everything except the drums and organ with multiple instrumental takes of his own: bass guitar, Wurlitzer organ, acoustic piano, big drum boom and his inimitable RnB guitar riffs. Once again, vocals wizardry was added in Switzerland, in another Transcontinental collaboration. Scratch and Keith finally got together in person in 2013 when Keith invited Scratch to New York to mix Keith’s cover of the Gregory Isaacs gem”Love Overdue.” It would be the final pairing of these two musical minds, but their small body of work was infused with magic, history, mystery, and prophecy all at once. SCRATCH’D, the Record Story Day Exclusive vinyl EP, includes the original vocal versions, “Books Of Moses” and “Heavy Voodoo,” plus new instrumental cuts, “Moses Books” (Dub Mix) and ‘Who Dares” (Dub Mix), which feature Keith’s guitar on the frontline. Egal, ob in bretonischen Kneipen, Londoner Pubs, Münchner Clubs oder Wiener Hochkulturhäusern – die Menschen lauschen, singen oder tanzen zu Songs, deren Worte ihnen wohl im ersten Moment fremd sind, deren Inhalte und Subtexte sie aber mit instinktiver Sicherheit erfühlen. Es sind diesmal die Phantasien von Vincent Wohinz und bei Noir mit Emanuel Rudas, die die Beiden konträren Frontmänner Alexandre Fedorenko und Vincent Wohinz, des französisch-österreichischen Trios (plus Gastmusikern) mit ordentlichem Hauptwohnsitz Wien umsetzen. Unterschiedlicher könnte der Zugang der beiden Sänger, Songwriter und Gitarristen nicht sein: Fedorenko, der westfranzösische Weltenbummler mit maritimer Erfahrung, dessen Anekdoten Bände füllen könnten; und Wohinz, ein studierter Philosoph aus einer bilingualen Künstlerfamilie, dessen Texte oft das Innerste, so zuvor oft Ungesagte verbalisieren. Dazu gesellt sich Jürgen Bauer am Schlagzeug. Er gibt der Musik ein Fundament eine rhythmische Struktur. Der Tiroler Künstler, Grafiker und Musiker, zeichnet sich zudem auch verantwortlich für das Design aller Plexus Solaire Veröffentlichungen. Die Bandchemie muss Spurenelemente von gutem französischen Rotwein in sich tragen. Und wurden nun erstmals mit Vinyl abgeschmeckt. C’est magnifique! Plexus Solaire sind eine Band, die sich immer wieder neu erfindet. Und doch konstant und nachhaltig ihren Fan-Kern adressiert. Französisch als Sprache ist kein exklusives Merkmal mehr. Die Songs wurden diesmal gemeinsam mit Max Perner produziert, einem Mann, der auch schon mit Garish, Clara Luzia und Thees Ulmann gearbeitet hat. Und dann findet sich plötzlich auch eine Ukulele im Soundbild und ein vorwitziges Pfeifen. Vincent Wohinz Gesang, seine behutsame Annäherung an Perfektion, die pointierten Rhythmen, das Magische an Jürgen Bauers Drums, Alex Fedorenkos sanfte und manchmal kreischende Gitarren und Peters Strutzenbergers optimal eingesetzter Bass liefern den Klang einer großen menschlichen Geschichte. Der Band haftet – bei aller Frische ihres Sounds – etwas Konservatives an, im besten Sinne: da schwingen die Sisters of Mercy und Jacques Brel genauso mit wie Noir Désir, Lou Reed oder Les Négresses Verte. Und dann ploppt da plötzlich ein «Happy Song» – nomen est omen – auf und findet sich in polyglotten Playlists. Das ist Adult Pop, der freilich nicht nur nach Spotify & Co. schreit. Sondern eben auch nach dem schönsten, reifsten, werthaltigsten Format: Vinyl. Songs wie «Rendez-Vous Magique», «Le Dernier Métro» oder eben «Day and Night» sind das Ticket dafür: intelligent, aber nicht verkopft. Charmant, aber nicht gekünstelt.
